Help with Java

Solution:

  • Make sure Java is turned on in your browser (see below)

Information about Java

How do I make sure Java is enabled in my browser?
Depends on your browser.

  • Internet Explorer: In typical Microsoft fashion, you need to do three things in Internet Explorer.  1) Click on “Tools” in the menu bar, then “Internet Options”, then select the “Advanced” tab at the top.  Find Java in the settings list, and make sure the option underneath this has a tick next to it (it was say something like “Use JRE ... for <applet>”).  Click okay.  If you cannot find a Java option, click here to download and install Java.  2) Click on “Tools” in the menu bar again, and then “Internet Options”.  This time, click on the “Security” tab at the top of the new window, then on the “Custom level” button in the “Security level for this zone” box.  In the next window, scroll down the list of settings, and right near the bottom your will see a “Scripting” section.  Next to “Active scripting”, enable the “Scripting of Java applets”, then keep clicking okay until all the windows are closed.  3) Now close your browser and open it up again.  It really couldn’t be easier.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Click on “Tools” in the menu bar, then “Options”.  Click on “Content” (or “Web features”) on the tab at the top of the new window, and make sure a tick is in the “Enable Java” check box.
  • Opera: Click on “Tools” in the menu bar, then “Quick Preferences”, and then make sure a tick is next to “Enable Java”.
  • Safari: Select “Safari” from the menu, and choose “Preferences”.  Now click on “Security” and select the “Enable Java” check box.

What is Java?
Java is a programming language that can be used in web pages.  You might hear the term “applets” used to describe Java that is running in a web page.

Why does your website need Java?
Java applets are the beating heart of Worksheet Magic.  They are used to serve all of the worksheets, which are provided in very high quality definition - similar to desktop publishing programs you may have installed on your computer.  This means no jagged edges or blocky pictures.  What you see on screen is output in beautiful, smooth curves to your printer (that’s the dream, anyway.)

Are there any security risks associated with turning on Java?
As with any programming language, yes.  Java applets cannot read or write files on your computer, and as such cannot plant a virus on your system, nor steal any data stored on your machine.  Indeed, when any of the applets on our website attempt to talk to your printer, your browser will even ask your permission first.  Most browsers manufacturers are so confident about Java they enable it by default.

Where can I download and install the latest version of Java?

Is Java anything to do with Javascript?
You’d think so, but no.  They’re completely unrelated; however, this site uses both.
