Inspiration

Here are some ideas for using spelling practice worksheets:

  • Improve your children’s spelling by getting them to look at each word, covering it up and then attempting to write it by themselves.
  • Each time, get them to focus on the parts of their spelling that are different from the correct spelling, or parts they find unusual.
  • If children find a word particularly difficult, ask them to attempt spelling it backwards.  This encourages students to become visual spellers, and research suggests that the best spellers are visual spellers (ie. those that do not rely on sounding out, but know when words “look” right or wrong.  Sorry, phonics lovers: it’s no good knowing that you need to write the ‘f’ sound in a word, because it can be spelt f, ff or ph.)
  • Spelling words in reverse also focuses attention on word endings, which are more likely to be unusual or irregular.
